The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

ACL is one of the tough bads of tissue that connect the bones of the thigh and plays an important role in knee joint function. It controls knee motion and stabilize the joint.

Modes of Injury to ACL
The ACL is the commonly injured during sports and road traffic accidents of two wheelers. But it may also tear during trivial injuries sustained during day to day activities. By changing direction too quickly as during a dance, a bad landing after jumping from a small height or even a slip and a fall in the bathroom can tear the ACL.

One may hear a ‘pop’ during an ACL rear and this is usually accompanied by immediate swelling of the knee. Most often we tend to pass this off as a simple knee sprain and it is only later that we realize its seriousness.
Effects of Tons ACL

After an ACL tear the knee becomes unstable it buckles or gives way when you take a sudden turn or even a small jump. One feels unsure while walking on uneven ground and slopes and one experience a lot of apprehension during such activities. Over a period of time the knee might give way even during normal walking.
After an ACL injury, your leg bone slides easily forward over the thigh bone. This abnormal movement causes progressive damage to the other structures inside the knee like the meniscus and articular cartilage and eventually leads to early wearing off (arthritis) of the knee.
